Monash University report: Significant financial and environmental waste that can be avoided today

The Monash University confirms what our Tradie’s have been saying for years.

Durable workwear, as shown in an independent study by Monash University, is one of the simplest sustainability decisions a business can make. It’s also one that can save a significant amount of money too.

When organisations think about sustainability, the conversation often turns to new systems, new reporting requirements, or major operational changes.

But sometimes, one of the most effective changes is much simpler: Buy workwear that lasts longer.

Independent research from Monash University has found that Proskill-MASCOT Workwear can last up to 5.7 times longer than other commonly used brands in Australia.

For businesses that buy uniforms, safety trousers, hi-vis clothing, jackets, and other workwear for teams in the field, that difference matters.

It means investing in high quality workwear can replace many cheaper purchases.

Less replacement. Less waste. Lower cost.

Workwear is made to be used hard. You already know the reality: workwear gets punished – job sites, vehicles, tools, weather, machinery, and long shifts. For the people wearing it, it’s PPE-level kit, not a “nice-to-have” uniform.

When workwear wears out quickly, it triggers a costly replacement cycle that increases purchasing and stock burden while driving more landfill waste, water use, and carbon emissions.

Monash University’s findings show what’s possible

By choosing workwear that lasts significantly longer, organisations can help avoid unnecessary replacement and reduce the hidden cost of short product life.

The estimated impact from one better purchasing decision can be significant:

✅ Up to $300 saved instead of wasted per pair of Proskill-Mascot in pants
Up to Around 20,000 litres of water saved instead of wasted
✅ Up to 60 kg of CO₂ emissions saved instead of wasted
Up to four fewer pants entering landfill

Across one worker, that is meaningful.

For a team of 10,000 workers at two pairs each, that could mean up to $6,000,000 saved, around 400 million litres of water saved, approximately 1,200 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided, and 80,000 fewer garments entering landfill.

That’s the equivalent of 160 Olympic swimming pools of water, taking around 400 cars off the road for a year, and 800 fewer wheelie bins of clothing sent to landfill.

A better result for business and the environment

Many organisations need to reduce costs and environmental impact at the same time. The Monash University research shows that, in workwear, they can support each other.

Longer-lasting garments help reduce replacement costs. They also help reduce the water, carbon, and waste associated with producing and disposing of additional clothing.

That makes durability one of the most direct sustainability strategies available to any organisation that buys workwear.

It does not require workers to change how they do their job.

It does not require complicated new processes.

It starts with choosing products that are made to last.

The study validating what our customers are saying

It’s not us or researchers at Monash University saying this. David Robilliard from Hazelbrook Plumbing tells it how it is: “Each pair of longer lasting work pants can save me up to $300.”

And what the environmental impact would be if 10% of plumbers in Australia purchased two pairs of durable workwear? We’d save up to $6 million dollars, 1,200 tonnes of CO₂, 400 million litres of water, and 40 tonnes of landfill.

What if 10% of our outdoor workforce were to purchase two pairs of longer lasting pants each

Based on the Monash University report and David’s experience below is the estimate of the waste which could be stopped if just 10% of 3 million outdoor workers/companies can stop immediately at 2 pairs each of they’re Proskill-Mascot pants,

✅ $180 million dollars saved instead of wasted in pants
✅ 12 million litres of water
✅ 36 thousand tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided
✅ 2.4 million less pants entering landfill
